CONVERGENCE

Curated by Debbie Dickinson

Convergence: Where diverse visions meet to create unexpected harmony.

The Convergence Exhibition at the Art on Paper Fair presents seven artists whose approaches span abstraction, photography, collage, satire, and architectural exploration. Rather than isolating each practice, the exhibition emphasizes the intersections—where diverse artistic languages encounter one another and spark layered dialogues of vision, form, and thought. Bill Buchman’s meditative acrylic abstractions immerse viewers in fluid fields of cool variations of blue, while S.L. Fuller reinterprets the figurative through the elegant lens of Art Deco, using pen and India ink to merge modernist history with contemporary refinement. Carole Bolger investigates “Architectural Existentialism,” drawing on structural motifs to probe the tension between space, existence, and human habitation, while Michael Katz balances vibrant, multi-hued abstraction with quiet expanses of white, aligning chaos and order in dynamic tension Iran Issa Khan monumentalizes natural forms in her photography, elevating coral into flower-like symbols of fragility and resilience, while Al Diaz transforms fragments of urban language and collage into politically and spiritually resonant compositions. Closing the circle, Anthony Haden-Guest’s incisive “Artoonery” fuses wit and critique, illuminating the cultural landscape with sharp humor. Convergence here is both theme and encounter—an exhibition in which disparate practices generate unexpected harmonies, revealing new ways of seeing and perceiving.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Al Diaz

Al Diaz
Al Diaz, a pioneer of the New York City graffiti scene and collaborator of Jean-Michel Basquiat, transforms found urban language into politically and spiritually charged collages. Using subway signage and letter fragments, his work fuses street art with social commentary, re-contextualizing public language to challenge authority and illuminate the human condition, while maintaining the raw energy of his graffiti roots.

Anthony Haden Guest Headshot - Debbie Dickinson Gallery

Anthony Haden-Guest
Anthony Haden-Guest’s art is defined by incisive cartoonery, translating his journalistic eye into a visual medium. His illustrations offer dry, acerbic humor and social critique, exposing the conventions of the art world, high society, and popular culture. Through minimalist line and sharp wit, Haden-Guest delivers work that is both accessible and intellectually engaging, merging humor with pointed observation.

Bill Buchman

Bill Buchman
Bill Buchman’s “Zentopia Series” explores abstract expressionism through a meditative, spiritual lens. His fluid acrylics, immersed rich in cool variations of Blue, create expansive, flowing compositions that convey boundless motion and internal energy. Buchman’s work prioritizes gesture and personal expression, inviting viewers into a contemplative space where abstraction becomes both emotional and infinite in its resonance.

Carole Bolger
Carole Bolger’s concept of “Architectural Existentialism” applies philosophical inquiry to visual form. Her work examines space, structure, and human experience, prompting reflection on freedom, authenticity, and existence within constructed environments. Using architectural motifs not to celebrate form but to question it, Bolger’s art merges the intellectual and emotional, inviting deep contemplation of the world and our place in it.

Iran Issa Khan

Iran Issa Khan
Iran Issa Khan’s photography monumentalizes natural forms, transforming a giant yellow coral into a flower-like symbol of aesthetic elegance. Drawing on her fashion photography background, she uses expert lighting and composition to elevate the coral from an ordinary organism to an object of sublime beauty, where form, texture, and color converge in a delicate, sensuous study of nature.

Michael Katz Artist

Michael Katz
Michael Katz’s multi-hued abstracts explore the tension between color and barrenness. His vibrant compositions, balanced by quiet expanses of white, create a dialogue between chaos and control. Katz transforms visual energy into thoughtful arrangements, where exuberant color and minimalist space coexist, reflecting order and harmony within expressive, dynamic forms.

S.L. Fuller

S.L. Fuller
S.L. Fuller’s “Les Demoiselles” series reinterprets revolutionary forms through a modernized Art Deco sensibility. The figures, refined and stylized, exude sophistication and cool elegance, softening the primitivism of the original. Fuller engages in a dialogue with art history, transforming foundational modernist work into a contemporary meditation on luxury, beauty, and social identity.
